AUGUST 2010
Minsk is the capital of the Republic of Belarus. This is an old city that was first mentioned in chronicles in 1067. Not much remains from the ancient past except several buildings from the 17th century. The city was almost ruined during World War II, and later, in 1974, it was named a Hero City for its great sufferings.
In 1793, Minsk became the capital of the Province of Minsk, and formed part of Russia. Industrial development in Russia, and constuction of railroads assisted Minsk in its developing as a huge industrial center. Moscow-Brest and Libava-Romny railroads connected the city with Russia, Poland, Ukraine, and the Baltic states. Since the beginning of the 1917 Russian Revolution, the rule in Minsk did change time and again. The foreign intervention caused irretrievable damage to Minsk. It was not until Minsk became the capital of one of the Union Republics that it managed to restore its former legacy.
Minsk is centrally located in the region with Moscow 750 km to the East and Warsaw 550 km to the West. Saint Petersburg is 900 km to the North and Kiev is 650 km to the South. Today Minsk is a major city in Belarus, its economical, cultural and educational center. The Academy of Sciences of Belarus and the Belarusian Lenin State University are located here. Minsk is known for its art and cultural achievements as well. There are 16 museums and 11 theatres in the city. The most famous museums are the National Museum of Belarusian History and Culture, the National Arts Museum, the Museum of History of the Great Patriotic War and the Museum of Old Belarusian Culture. The Belarusian Ballet is something you shouldn' t miss. Minsk has marvelous examples of Baroque architecture - the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit (1642), and the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul (1613). Other great buildings include the Maryinsky Cathedral, Church of St. Mary-Magdalene (1847), St. Stanislaus Cathedral (1754). Cathedral of the Holy Ghost
The first half of the 17th century in Belarus was marked by the
advent of many churches. The Dominican monastery (1622), the
Basilian convent of the Holy Trinity (1630), the Bernadine convents
(1628, 1642) were opened in Minsk.
The history of The Cathedral of the Holy Ghost dates back to 1633-1642 when the convent was built to serve the Bernadine nuns. In 1652, the conventual building was made of stone. But the convent's consecration was delayed for about 40 years due to the Muscovite invasion. In 1741, on account of fire, the original structure of the building was damaged then reconstructed. In 1852, the convent was abrogated and moved to Nesvizh. The building was given to the Russian church for use as a monastery. But half a century later it was closed again by the Bolsheviks. Today the church is open. It's a great repository of icons by Moscow Academic School. The most precious icon though is a wonder-working Icon of the Mother of God discovered in Minsk in 1500. This icon is also called Icon of Minsk. But for many centuries, the icon was outside the city, even outside Belarus at all. The history of this marvellous image goes back to evangelic times. By legend, it was made by St. Luke the Evangelist. In the course of many years, the icon was kept in Byzantium. On the eve of the Baptism of Russia -- more than a thousand years ago -- the Kievan Grand Duke Vladimir brought the Icon of the Mother of God to Kiev where it was for five centuries. During the Tatar horde, one of the Tatars threw the icon in Dnieper having taken off the decorations. Nevertheless, the icon survived and appeared on the Svisloch River where it was found by 'extraordinary shine'.

Quite simply, there is nowhere like Belarus. For many Westerners it’s a pariah state presided over by the much-vilified You-Know-Who, while Minsk is little more than a quirky reminder of the Soviet Union in its pompous prime. But for those who actually bother to go and see it for themselves, Minsk is a surpsingly charming, calm, clean and safe city. Locals talk freely and frankly about You-Know-Who with either contempt or affection, largely depending on their situation and income. But most take a genuine pride in their city which, it must be remembered, was built out of the total devastation of WWII. Minsk now serves as an almost unparalleled monument to the more grandiose aspirations of Soviet architecture and urban planning. The city centre’s spacious, pedestrian-friendly streets and ornate facades are truly impressive at times. There is not a great deal to do in terms of sightseeing compared with most European capitals. A few days, or a week at most, should suffice to get the best out of the city. Minsk is more a place to stroll around and soak up the unique atmosphere. In keeping with the rest of Europe, prices continue to rise sharply, notably with fuel and food, meaning the prices listed here will probably be out of date before long. That said, you’ll still feel like a tycoon with so many roubles in your pocket.
Why? Taking a holiday in
Minsk, capital of Belarus, is like whizzing back in a time machine to an
Orwellian Soviet-era society where the clock stopped in the 1960s. A
Minsk holiday is therefore a unique and fascinating experience. OverviewDating back to the 10th century, Minsk, capital of Belarus, is one of Europe's oldest cities, but it presents a surprisingly modern aspect today, most of its historic buildings having been flattened during World War II. After the war, during the 1950s, Minsk was rebuilt as a showpiece Soviet city, and little has changed since then. Scrupulously neat wide boulevards and squares lined with grandiose block-style buildings, interspersed with looming statues of Lenin, war memorials and Soviet symbols, set the backdrop for this city which is home to almost two-million people, on the banks of the Svisloch River. Visitors to Minsk will find it hard not to be struck by the simple pride and joy the local citizens take in their city, where the interiors and style are a somewhat 'over-the-top' and often kitsch attempt at modern sophistication. There are nightclubs and casinos full of mirrors and lights; restaurants with steel and glass levels; theatres oozing baroque both on and off-stage; and a variety of incredibly themed health spas (called 'saunas') where waterfalls cascade into indoor pools. It all adds up to a fascinating experience, which visitors either love or hate, but cannot fail to appreciate. The present in Minsk is interesting, but so is the past. Because of its central eastern location between Poland and Ukraine, this city has been a European battleground over the centuries, suffering at the hands off the Russian Tsar's troops in the 1600s, Peter the Great and Sweden in the 1700s, Napoleon and then Hitler. Perhaps it is not surprising that the city is seemingly content under communism-inspired rule after all it endured with imperialism.
